It’s a break weekend in many high schools so things dial down a little bit.

The main game this weekend is the North Carolina school final between Charlotte Catholic and Huskies out of Hough, NC.

These two teams met up earlier in the season and that produced Charlotte Catholic’s closest game of the season, a game they won by the score of 14-12.

Huskies also lost 14-12 against Marvin Ridge, but turned that result around in the semifinals. So there’s reason to believe that Huskies could make the game a bit different on Saturday.

Head Coach Bruce Colson said one of the differences between the first game against Marvin Ridge and the second was that “the passes stuck. We played with power in the carries. We won the gain line and the forwards laid the platform. So it all kind of clicked.”

They will need that again.

“Catholic bring serious line speed and a real power game from 1 through 12 on the field. So it will be a very different game compared to Marvin,” Colson added.

The closeness of their first meeting means that an unbeaten Charlotte Catholic team will not take it lightly.

“We had a really solid week of work put in by the team around our structures and our game plan,” said Charlotte Catholic Head Coach Jason Zehmke. “We know we’ll need to front-up physically and improve out wide both on offense and defense.”

Huskies will have to take care of some things, too.

“We need to be patient and not force the ball wide early” said Colson. “But first and foremost we need to at least gain parity in the contact area. That’s easier said than done against a very well-coached and drilled team with very good players in key positions.”

Zehmke has respect for Huskies, too.

“Hough has a fantastic pack of forwards and a 9-10 that can dictate play very effectively, so we’ll need to cut out the mental lapses,” he said. “It’s going to be a fantastic final.”
