During our tour with the USA Military team, we spoke with many on tour about what it all means.
The rugby, and winning, and playing well ... all of that is very nice. But it's more, much more than that.
Tour Manager Kevin Flynn is hugely passionate about the ancillary effects of playing as a military team. Men and women who come out of the military often face a difficult transition to civilian life. That difficult is exacerbated if a veteran faces deployment, military action, or is injured.
Playing rugby, being with people who understand what they're going through, and finding a commonality is what it's about. Our military veterans need our support, and sometimes rugby can be the perfect avenue for that.
It's about the game, but it's not about the game. Mark Drown and Flynn insisted that this USA Military Rugby program include veterans, because the veterans need to be included and part of it all.
GRR's Alex Goff sat down with two players on the tour who had seen their share of action during their time of service. J'Son Townes and Cliff Davidson love to play, but it's more about being on the team.
