It was a long, long Saturday for the Saint Mary’s Gaels, but a fairly gratifying one.

Playing collegiate rugby in America costs money as the search for top competition means plenty of air travel. This was the case on the weekend as Saint Mary’s players—an A side and a B side—flew to Phoenix to play Grand Canyon. That meant a 3AM wakeup call, a trip to the airport in the Bay Area, and a flight to Arizona to play the games. After that, it was back to the airport for a 6PM takeoff and back home Saturday night. Maybe a 20-hour day for rugby.

The result was a 53-0 win for the Gaels 1st side and a win for the 2nds of 88-15. More than that was challenging competition.

“GCU is a strong opponent and came at us from the kickoff,” said Saint Mary’s Head Coach Tim O’Brien, who had to be shaking his head when the opening kickoff when out on the full and the ensuing scrum led to a penalty for GCU when the Gaels got it in their heads to “make a statement” or something.

Regardless, Saint Mary’s did hold the Lopes out and started, eventually, to put some things together.
“We were OK,” said O’Brien. “We weren’t super. We were a bit disjointed and out of our flow but I would credit Grand Canyon for some of that.”

But overall a tactically aware team that was comfortable playing defense and taking opportunities won the game.
Leading the way was scrumhalf Will Lhommedieu, who kept the tempo going and emerged as a key spark for the team. Hooker Nate Deegan was big this weekend and, said O’Brien, “he’s one of those players who gets the little things right.”

Lock Matt Abbes, who has had to come back from injury, is healthy and ready to make an impact.
He has a good rugby IQ, wins ball, and is a strong defender. He helped lead the defensive effort.

But that wasn’t all for Saint Mary’s. Their 2nd side, after starting a little bit in the early going, exploded for a win of 88-15. They were adventurous and interesting in their play.

“It was a long day but GCU were super hosts,” said O’Brien.

Meanwhile, a younger team stayed home to play the Olympic Club men’s team. O-Club won that one, overpowering a younger side, controlling the lineouts, and dominating possession.

O’Brian paid as much attention to that game as the others.

“We got overpowered and that’s an element of play we are struggling with.”
Next up for Saint Mary’s is an Arizona team that in their preseason in the fall tested Lindenwood and will bring a very polished outfit to Moraga.
