Playoffs and trophies are at stake in the West now in boys HS rugby.

Texas

Celina and Woodlands already claimed their state championships in the Varsity and the Club leagues, respectively.

Celina, Woodlands, Champs in Texas

For the club league, a shift back to a competition where everyone plays everyone and then the top four go into the playoffs seems to have been successful.

It allowed teams to vary their play and to play teams of different styles. Texas does not have 100 HS teams that mean that winning your city requires beating several teams, so playing around the state is what it’s about.

Texas does have 35 teams across Club D1, Club D2, and the Varsity league. That’s a growing number, especially in the Varsity league.

Arizona

We report on Red Mountain’s defeat of Tempe in the Arizona final here.

Utah

Herriman won comfortably over East HS in the High School semifinal with Cole Reagan getting a couple of tries, and they look to be the favorites to win the final this weekend.

Mountain Ridge edged Brighton in the other semi, thank to a try and the kicking of Connor Swapp.

Cavemen will play LCA in the club final as expected. LCA was pushed by Mountain View but prevailed 40-32 thanks to some more successful goalkicking. Cavemen were 42-10 winners over Highland in their semi. Hooker Kymani Maumasi scored two tries with Fisher Baldwin, Mason Tapusoa, Aiseah Hafoka, and Matai Mama all touching down. Luke Vernon was a perfect six-for-six on conversions.

“Cavemen’s defense won the game,” said Head Coach Rich Vernon. Highland got into scoring position multiple times only to be sent away without any payoff.

Colorado

Glendale hosts the championship weekend and it's a somewhat bizarre situation. It's not rare to see an upset in a semifinal, but two? That's weird.

East HS dominated league play with an excellent defense and were unbeaten going into the semis against a 1-4 Valor. Monarch was 4-1-1 and has defeated Regis Jesuit (who were 3-3) twice. Well, in the semis, Regis Jesuit edged Monarch 22-20 to make the final.

And with East vs Valor, Valor put in their best performance of the and won the game on a very athletic play by lock and vice captain Pierce Bell.

The top seeds, combined record 9-1-1, will be playing for 3rd.

Idaho

Owyhee and Rocky Mountain are in the state final.
Owyhee beat Eagle in impressive fashion 67-10, a win built on a powerful forward pack and set piece and smart tactical play.

Eagle weren’t helped by a red card midway through the first half.

Rocky Mountain exploded to a big lead in the first half but Middleton mounted a comeback and were in excellent position to take this one. It was 40-33 for Rocky Mountain when the leaders got a try and a penalty to put it away 50-33.

Washington

The semifinal matchups are set. The Liberty Patriots scored four converted tries to beat the Eastside Lions 28-7 and secure 1st place in league play. Eastside is second. In the other games over the weekend, Chuckanut edged Schoolhouse 36-34. That match was enough to put Chuckanut into 4th and make the semis.
Rainier Highlanders beat Snoqualmie 65-0 to clinch 3rd.

So this weekend, Liberty takes on Chuckanut and Eastside will play Rainier in the semifinals.

Oregon

It’s been an almighty chase for 1st in Oregon, with Camas and Ben having tied each other earlier in the season. Going into the week, Bend was 4-0-1 and a +122 in points difference. Camas was 4-0-1 and a +108.

Bend beat Chinook 44-24 to improve to a +142. That number was crucial. Oregon caps winning margins at 35, and it turned out, that’s just what Camas needed. Official final score: 40-5. Camas took 1st by a single point in points difference—Camas is 239 points for, and 96 against. Ben is 239 points for, yes, the same amount, and 97 against.

With Chinook losing, Beaverton needed a win to secure 4th, and with a 29-19 win over Linn-Benton. they did just that.

So it’s Beaverton at Camas for one semi, and Summit at Bend in the other.

Bend Blues were 1 point away from 1st.
Bend Blues were 1 point away from 1st.
Southern California

The San Diego Mustangs were explosive in a 52-19 defeat of SOC Raptors. Shay Farkash in the back row and Adrian Pham at center have been outstanding on a team that has outscored opponents 272-64 in five league games. That includes their semifinal win.

In the other semi, Thunder beat Belmont Shore 40-33, with the inside back combo of Max Ricono and Ryan Scully opening up scoring opportunities.

So it’s Mustangs vs Thunder in the final, and that matchup back on March 21 was the closest game of the season for San Diego, to the tune of 38-17.

Northern California

SFGG will take on Lamorinda in the NorCal Premier club final. Lamo capped off a pretty impressive run with a 50-5 win over Mother Lode to finish up 3-2-1 in the league.

It was been a very tight NorCal league, especially among the teams ranked #2 through #5. Those teams all have essentially the same records: 3-2-1, 3-3, 3-2-1, and 3-3, in that order. The difference has been bonus points, with Lamo’s key loss, a National Championship play-in 41-38 defeat to San Mateo, still earning them bonus points for four tries and also for a close loss.

It’s unfortunate for Lamorinda, because San Mateo ultimately pulled back from their Nationals invitation for player availability reasons. Lamorinda, meanwhile, was chugging along nicely, tying Granite Bay, and then beating Danville, Marin, and Mother Lode in three straight games to launch themselves into 2nd.

SFGG is clear atop the league, having gone 6-0 with their close 28-26 over the mercurial San Mateo side being the key result, April 18.

So this weekend (with GRR in attendance!), everyone will be at Stanford University for the finals. SFGG will play Lamorinda in the championship match. San Mateo will play Granite Bay for 3rd.

Carmichael will play East Palo Alto for the Gold Championship, and Chico takes on Santa Cruz for the Boys Silver Championship.
