Red Mountain capped off April by winning the Arizona state final, getting by Tempe 17-10.

Played at night at the Scottsdale Sports Complex, these rivals played a back-and-forth clash for the third time this season.

Both sides defended well and it took until the 26th minute when Tempe crashed over.

Red Mountain answered quickly, getting the ball back from the restart and putting center Zyon Leuluai through a gap. That tied it up 5-5 and was a big play for Leuluai, who had just returned from extensive post injury rehab.

In the second half, the game was tight. Red Mountain nudged themselves ahead when wing Elliot Read sped to the corner.

Down 12-5, Tempe found some space to get through for their second try.

That made it 12-10 and the final five minutes of the game were  very tense. With time essentially up Red Mountain reserve scrumhalf, Simon Mair, sent it to flyhalf Weston Kenny, and Kenny sliced through a gap and raced 20 meters. He needed support, and wing Sam Taylor was there.

He raced to the line and was over to seal the game 17-10.

Red Mountain won the game because their defensive pods were able to hold against the very aggressive Tempe attack. The tactical kicking from Kenny was very good, while the Red Mountain forwards consistently gained ground on their pick-and-goes.

That produced the space out wide.
