In Spring 2012, the Great Midwest Rugby Conference (originally named the WIIL Rugby Conference) was formed by joining D2 collegiate men's teams from the Wisconsin RFU, Illinois RFU, and CARFU. This was done partially to comply with USA Rugby's directive on forming conferences as well as increasing competition and enhancing the reputation of rugby in the Midwest.  Since then they have branched out into Iowa, as well.

The Great Midwest Conference Champion regularly has teams go far in the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) national-level playoffs.

In recent years, the Great Midwest added a Small College competition, and now runs competitions in D2 and D3 (which is what Small College is now called).

Northern Iowa Powers On

The University of Northern Iowa moved from the Northern Lights Conference to the WIIL looking for tougher competition, but still with the desire to win games - so far they’ve got everything they wanted.

Saturday UNI shut out Loyola 33-0 despite missing five starters to move to 4-0 and remain in a tie with Lindenwood-Belleville at the top of the WIIL South.

WIIL - Whitewater Rolls

Wisconsin-Whitewater continues to roll in the WIIL with an impressive 85-0 shutout of UW-Stout.

It’s been a long season for Stout, which started the fall ranked in Goff Rugby Report’s top ten, in part because they hadn’t lost a lot of players to graduation. But things have not gone their way, while Whitewater continues to win.

Upstart Undefeateds Highlight WIIL Weekend

The WIIL Men’s DII college conference gets back on the field this weekend with six games involving five teams ranked in the Goff Rugby Report top 45.

National #2 UW-Whitewater hosts UW-Stout in a game that, a year ago, would have been a division decider. But Stout is struggling this year, and it’s some newcomers and some upstarts who are hoping to chase the Warhawks.
