St. Ignatius capped off their season with their 5th straight Rugby Ohio boys 7s title, defeating St. Xavier in the championship match.

Ohio runs their 7s season in two groups, with teams in the South playing each other over the course of five weeks, and teams in the North doing the same. West Pitt out of Pittsburgh, Pa. also competes because the travel to Cleveland for the North sessions is easier than travel to Eastern Pennsylvania.

Won-loss record decides your top four from each side, and those eight teams are seeded for a straight bracket format, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.

In the opening round, all of the higher-seeded teams won.

St. Xavier had to work for it against Shaker HS team that has come along well this year.

But they needed to win a key scrum late in the game, were pushed off the ball, and St. X scored the game-winner off thatturnover.

West Pitt defeated Dublin to make the semis.

In the other bracket, Ignatius won comfortably against Walnut Hills, while St. Edward defeated Moeller, making it three North teams into the semis.

The semis were wild. Ignatius and St. Edward have been playing very tight games all season and it was tight in this game, too. Ignatius thought they had the try that would put it away but it was called back. So St. Ed's led 14-10 and had a lineout at midfield.

The ball was overthrown, Ignatius took it and Preston Bucsanyi chipped through to chase the ball down to score. he was impeded off the ball and then tackled before he got to the pill. Penalty try, and Ignatius had won it 17-14.

It was pretty close game in the other semi, as well, with St. Xavier and West Putt played to a 17-17 tie at full time.

St. Xavier pulled away in the overtime, going right through off the kickoff and then scoring on an interception to lead 31-17. West Putt scored to get close, but St. X closed it out.

The final was tight early, with St. X scoring early and getting another over the line before the break; Ignatius took a 19-12 lead into halftime.

But it the second half Ignatius pulled away, with power forwards Quinn Ferris setting up Jace Herman. Danny Rosol scored on an intercepted, and Stephen Perez iced it for a 48-12 win. Bucsanyi scored two tries in the game and scrumhalf Charlie French scored a try and four conversions for 13 points. Perez, Rosol, Herman, Ferris, and Grady Beeler all touched down in the match.

For the staff of Matt Pickston, Mike Pelagalli, and Bill Craighead, this was a different-style 7s team that used kicks and some other different offensive wrinkles, and they put it together well. However, there were several very challenging teams competing this year, and it wasn't a walkover by any stretch.
