The Big Ten Rugby Conference (B1G Rugby) is a collegiate rugby league composed primarily of universities that are members of the Big Ten academic and athletic institutions, but it operates independently from the official Big Ten athletic conference. The league was formed to build on the traditional rivalries among these universities, but because of travel challenges, not every original Big 10 is in the rugby conference. Only seven of the teams that made up the Big 10 NCAA conference starting in the 1950s are in the Big Ten Rugby Conference. To even things out, the rugby conference added Notre Dame, which is a University with similar history and background to the Big Ten Universities.

This conference is split into West and East, with teams playing three conference games each. The top two from each side then play in semifinals, and the bottom two from each side play in 5th-place semifinals. Then all of the teams meet for a day of championship rugby in which all eight are placed 1st through 8th.

Of the eight teams in B1G Rugby, five play in the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) postseason, while the other three play toward a College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) postseason.

Time for Contenders to Make a Big 10 Push

Time to separate the contenders from the pretenders in the Big Ten, as most of the top half teams in the conference play each other.

A quick glance at the stats shows that Indiana has dominated, clearly. They've dominated so much that even without their captain and best player, Bryce Campbell, they are heavily favored against Michigan.

Big Ten Latest - Top Teams Put Hands Up

It's been a season of lopsided victories so far in the Big Ten, and certainly it looks as though there's a group of strong teams, and a group of not-so-strong teams, and possibly two trying to jump from one to the other.

Big Ten Preseason Games

The Big Ten doesn’t get going for two weeks but several of the teams in the conference saw action this weekend.

Ohio State slammed Cincinnati 59-5 Friday, with Jojo Eramo featured heavily in the scoresheet as did captain Aaron Thomas - both scored three tries. The Buckeyes looked good against a tough Cincinnati team.

Indiana Looks to Next Challenge

Well, they keep on winning.

At some point we’re going to have to recognize that Indiana has a very good chance at upsetting the DIA apple cart. Certainly the DIA Top 20 voters think so, as IU sits solidly at #4, ahead of the likes of Utah, Kutztown, and this coming weekend’s opponent, Penn State.
