Big Ten Latest - Top Teams Put Hands Up

Ohio State won this week as did Wisconsin, Michigan, and, of course, Indiana.

It's been a season of lopsided victories so far in the Big Ten, and certainly it looks as though there's a group of strong teams, and a group of not-so-strong teams, and possibly two trying to jump from one to the other.

This week, as expected, Indiana jumped to 2-0 with an 80-7 defeat of Illinois. What makes this notable is that Illinois had opened the season with a 45-0 win over Iowa, and so you'd figure the Illini were in the top half. Well, there's being in the top half, and there's hanging with IU, which is a different thing entirely. IU dominated, and now look ahead to Purdue ... which is likely to be another comfortable win after Ohio State hammered the Boilermakers 52-12.

This was Ohio State's opening game in the Big Ten, and it was a good one. The Buckeyes started four freshman but the coaching staff said they need to see more from this team. They, of course, have plenty of games to get there.

Michigan fell behind 5-0 to Iowa before Tanner Visco and Tomer Chen got them in front. Iowa replied and it was 14-12 leading into halftime and 21-19 just after the break. Only once Nick Azzopardi scored did the Wolverines feel even a little bit comfortable - they eventually won 33-19.

And Wisconsin kept pace with IU with a 51-10 defeat of Michigan State.

Head Coach Nic Tyson said he's pretty happy with how his squad is looking considering they had no warmup games. A core of players who have been working together well and who exert intense defensive pressure has the Badgers thinking big. They use a bit of a blitz defense, and, because they are generally small, try to play with speed and intelligence.

With Dane Fleck scoring tries and Calvin Carlson doing to tough work up front, and with all of the players working on their ball skills, Wisconsin is a handful.

So with two weeks done, Indiana and Wisconsin look very strong. Michigan is also 2-0, but if you're a pessimist you'll note their scores aren't as dominant as the others'. Ohio State gets in that top list after one game. Iowa, Purdue, and Michigan State are struggling right now. Illinois and Minnesota are trying to bridge the gap, and could well be among the top four when all is said and done.

With that in mind, next week's games aren't necessarily hard to predict. But in two weeks Michigan is at Indiana, and Wisconsin at Minnesota. Those games could tell fans a lot.
