Xavier HS secured another New York state title with an impressive 44-19 win over Fordham Prep Saturday.

Following on a HS National Championships in which they finished 5th, going 2-1, the Knights capped off a season in which, according to Head Coach Greg Norris, they improved greatly through the weeks.

"It's a remarkable improvement and great development from where we started to where we've finished, Norris told GRR. "No doubt every player improved and learned something about the game, themselves, and their part in it."

It was a good, well-rounded victory for Xavier and Norris said he saw good performances throughout the squad.

"We had a few mental errors that led Fordham into the game slightly, but that's rugby," said Norris. "We are a talented group of players who, when they are all on the same page, can produce some amazing rugby."

But an ebb in focus could hurt them.

Fullback Jack Cross was outstanding in the match and was named MVP.

Xavier's varsity side played 20 games this season, which is a pretty impressive number. They went 15-5, with perhaps the loss that rankled most a tour match to Lamorinda in Northern California by the score of 38-36. The other four matches were all against teams that finished high at the HS National Championships: Doylestown (3rd among HS Clubs), St. Ignatius (2nd among School Teams), La Salette (3rd in School), and Gonzaga (4th in School).

The Knight also have 11 wins against ranked teams.

"I am immensely proud of this group of players," concluded Norris.

In the New York D2 final, Dwight HS beat Orchard Park 28-19. Dwight did well to control possession and got an MVP performance from center Lorenzo Capra.
