Who Leads in Florida?

Key Biscayne wins a lineout vs Okapi White.

Key Biscayne sits atop the Rugby Florida HS league as they are now 4-0.

The Rats have impressed with a pretty tough defense and a very smart kicking game, and over the last three weeks have beaten both Okapi teams—they are the only team to beat Okapi White.

Santiago Casserly has been especially good at center both as an attacker and being central to the defense. Lock Benjamin Diaz nails down the set piece and has also been crucial in making sure the attack runs with continuity.

But, added Head Coach Javier Casserly,"it's a long season. We're not in the playoffs yet. We're 4-0 and that's good but the truth is going to show in how we keep playing."

Chasing the Rats are Okapi White, which is the Wanderers 1st side. They lost but just the one try to Key Biscayne and certainly would like another shot at them. Last week Okapi beat Jacksonville 25-19 to move to 3-1, and Jacksonville would be that other team chasing the Rats, as they now sit at 2-1.

"The coaches felt the difference could have been higher," said Okapi Head Coach Juan Orfilla, who, tellingly, stayed with his Okapi Pink side to face (and evaluate?) Key Biscayne a second time.. "We missed many opportunities in 5/10 meters and conceded too many penalties that allowed Jacksonvlle to be close in the score thanks to their kicker."

Orfilla pointed out that his defense wasn't broken often and they generated chances that didn't pay off.

"That's an aspect that we need to improve on," said Orfilla.

But it was close, and penalties or tries, Jacksonville was able to score. Wolverines Head Coach Aaron Church felt the game could have gone either way. "I'm really proud of this group this year and seeing their development over the preseason and season is encouraging," said Church. "The biggest development is our forward pack from last year only two returners from last year's squad. So there is freshness there but we're working well with loose forwards that play like backs."

Those would be Matt Ramos, Warner White, and Noah Theisen and Jacksonville's midfield of Zander Erasmus (standing six-feet-four) and Slade Castle-Pierce are in good form. Fullback Cameron Correll is also outstanding.

This will be a smaller weekend in the Florida league. Key Biscayne is at the Carolina Ruggerfest while Okapi White and Jacksonville take the week off.

So it's a good time to look at the standings and get ready for a torrid final month leading into the playoffs.
