You kind of feel like there’s something heating up as more teams outside of California get active.

The notable game outside of the West is most certainly Lindenwood traveling to Jonesboro, Ark. to face Arkansas State.

They don’t ease into it, do they?

This is the start of the serious run to a playoff campaign for both teams. Lindenwood Head Coach Josh Macy is under no illusions as to how tough the game will be … because Arkansas State is always tough.

“They’re ranked #7 for a reason,” Macy said, adding that assistant coach (and former Lindenwood player) Corey Harmann ran a film session with the forwards showing old footage of Lions vs Red Wolves games.

“The point was to show that it’s always been like this. They have always been this physical. It’s a really cool occasion and there’s a lot of history in the game. And we have to remember that in some ways we’re the hump they’re trying to get over. For us we have four very competitive games without a break and that’s meant to test all our systems and our urgency and our preparation and to mirror a playoff run.”

Coming off a CRAA Fall Classic win over Mount St. Mary’s in December, ASU is looking for more.

“The boys are eager,” said Head Coach Dominic Shaw. “We’re super excited. Lindenwood always poses a physical challenge. We just want to make sure that we can make them play to our tempo and that control the ball on attack. That experience at the Fall Classic was really nice. Playing Mount was different, and the guys at CRAA make a hell of an effort to put it on. What we took out of it is we have to be sure about our discipline.”

Interesting Shaw says that, because Macy is looking maybe to unleash his players a bit.

“We need to play with an edge,” he said. “We are at our best when we do that and we have to play that way, not just reserve it for each other at home on a Tuesday.”

Also on the slate is another two games involving Trinity Western, as the Canadian side goes to Southern California to play Cal Poly and UC Santa Cruz. If you think you’ve been seeing the Spartans on American college team schedules a bit more, you’re not hallucinating.

There has been talk of Trinity Western joining D1A andHead Coach Andrew Evans said they are certainly interested in doing that.

“Since launching our rugby program in 2019, our goal has been to compete against American universities, particularly along the West Coast,” Evans told GRR. “We appreciate the expansive style of rugby played there and value the high level of competition, which consistently challenges us to improve. While much of Canada east of the Rockies faces harsh winter conditions, Langley remains largely snow-free throughout the year, making cross-border competition a natural and practical fit for our varsity schedule.”

Evans will suit up some younger players for part of the trip, just as they did in a recent match against Pacific Pride, the Canadian Development program.

But while TW is traveling to the USA for a lot of their games—they will play at Cal Poly, UCSC, and Western Washington this winter/spring—they are always open to American teams visiting British Columbia.
Santa Cruz will give a return match in late March, and Arizona will be at Langley March 21.
“We hope additional teams will consider touring to Canada as well,” said Evans. “The invitation is wide open!”

On the East Coast, Queens hosts Southern Virginia. SVU showed that they are doing exactly what new Head Coach Paul Lasike wants them to do in the CRAA Fall Classic, as they are rebuilding inside and out. For Queens, this is one of three important 15s games for the Royals (who play in NCR D1)). Head Coach Tyree Reed uses these games to get all of the players who will be suiting up next fall on the same page.

It’s a way to get a jump on the 2026 fall season.

Utah follows on from their 38-28 win over Utah Valley with an away game at Utah State. The Utes are putting some performances together.

Also of note, Cal visits Arizona and then Grand Canyon on a long weekend trip to the desert. These will be equally difficult matches for the Bears. Both teams will want to show they can hang with the defending champs.

And in the California Conference, San Diego at Cal State Long Beach will go a long way to telling us (and everyone else) which team can make a push for a potential playoff argument. USD is newly up from D1AA and looked very good the last time out. But the 49ers can attack from anywhere, and Head Coach PeterSio has them playing a nifty run-and-gun style that is starting to mesh with the power guys up front.

Finally we're posting this just as this game below between BYU and UCLA kicks off. So we'll discuss this one post-match.
