As May comes to a close it's state championship time this weekend.

Ohio

Rugby Ohio sees their Varsity final once again be St. Ignatius vs St. Edward. After the change in leadership at Rugby Ohio, one of the small changes in policy was a plan to alternate the Varsity final between Cleveland and Cincinnati. However, if both finalists are from one of those cities, then the final would be played in that city.

The reason, of course, is to limit needless travel while also opening the potential for a larger crowd. That's what's happening here. Ignatius and Ed's have played three times this season so far, a 27-7 win for Ignatius back in March, a 15-8 Ignatius win at the Midwest tournament, an event that the Ignatius seniors skip because of senior prom, and finally a tense 21-14 Ignatius win May 7.

And despite the fact that Ignatius took 2nd at the Boys HS Rugby National Championships, and St. Edward were 8th, Ed's has to be targeting this game as a chance to bride that seven-point gap and take the title.

The D1 final is between Westshore out of the Avon Lake, Ohio area, and Warrior Rugby out of Dublin. Warrior entered as the #2 seed and did well to beat Medina 20-5 in the semis behind try-scoring sensation Sam Crum's two tries. These two teams met in April and it was four tries apiece, with Westshore converting more for a 26-22 win.

Wisconsin

Elkhorn beat Green bay 28-17 in last week's semis to make this final against Eastside.

The Demon Elks put together a very good team performance and it has been that consistently-good play from every player that has seen them through.

Six of the seniors on this team have been playing since middle school and they are the heart of the team.

Senior experience is also the story for the Eastside Exiles, who edged the Pulaski Roos 13-12 to make the championship match.

A strong, hardworking forward pack set the tone for the Exiles and they play hard all day.

Minnesota

Hopkins booked a place in next week's final with a 61-24 defeat of East Metro Thursday night. Cooper Coykendall scored three tries while Caleb Holloway added two. Fullback Keane Woolever added 21 with eight conversions and a try.

East Metro managed four tries, all from No. 8 and captain Aiden Winsor.

Who will they play? We don't know yet. Minnetonka (4-1) plays Edina (3-2) tonight (Friday, May 29) to see who moves on. The losing team and East Metro will get a game, too, as they play for 3rd also on June 6. Already set is the 5th-place match between the Freeborn Eagles and Red River.

Massachusetts IAA

We're set for the semifinals in the MIAA with Monday seeing St. John's vs Milton HS at St. John's Prep, and then Wednesday Boston College hosts Xaverian Brothers.

BC is undefeated and, by far, leads in the Power Rankings, which MIAA uses to rank teams. That's because they have strong winning margins and have played tough teams. At 6-1 Milton was ranked below St. John's (4-1) because of strength of schedule.

But, interestingly, it was a loss that ensured Xaverian Brothers got the #4 seed. Last week they were edged 22-21 by St. John's. But losing by one point to such a strong team gave them a boost, and they're #4.

Illinois

On June 3 New Trier is slated to play a La Salette Academy side in what is a championship match between the club champion, New Trier, and the school champion, La Salette.

La Salette has generally been running a younger side in their Illinois competition, and won their semifinal over Neuqua 36-19 on Tuesday. No player who started in the national semifinal vs Herriman played in that Illinois semi.

Regardless of that result, Neuqua and Morton will play for the Varsity final. La Salette, Neuqua, New Trier, and Naperville have been playing a srot of super-series during the season, as well. The final match will be New Trier vs La Salette.

Michigan

In the top division Detroit Catholic Central takes on West Ottawa while Rockford plays Brighton in the semifinals.

DCC went into their final league match undefeated in the state but lost to Rockford 26-19. Those two are currently favored to make it to the championship game.

Connecticut

Greenwich defeated Fairfield Pegasi convincingly in the semifinals to advance to June 6's final. There they will face Trumbull, who beat Fairfield Prep last week. Greenwich won the last meeting between those two.

It's SImsbury vs Stamford in the D2 final.
