Big Scores in Rugby East Saturday
Kutztown University opened their Rugby East account with a fairly straightforward 95-8 win over West Virginia.
The Mountaineers are somewhat down this year so Kutztown was favored to win, but it was important for the Golden Bears to get their young players started on a winning note. The scoreline shows that there’s talent all through the lineup.
Several HS All American players and candidates joined Kutztown’s freshman class this year, including West End standouts Dmontae Noble and Jacob Estes, and Jackson Clark (South Greenville) and Joe Thatcher (Bishop England) from South Carolina. With that youth they return some excellent talent, including John Sage, Murphy Lill, Kina Malafu, Dave Sneed, Angel Santiago, Nick Hohlt, Evan Anderson, and others.
“Like most teams in our conference, we should be competitive if we stay healthy,” said Kutztown Head Coach Gregg Jones. “I’m excited about our youth movement intertwined with our outstanding underclassmen that we are returning.”
Also winning Saturday in the Rugby East was Army, which beat Buffalo 50-0. The game was perhaps more competitive than the score indicates, with UB showing well in the set piece.
UB Head Coach Mike Hodgins said his team’s performance was “night and day compared to last time we played them in terms of our fitness and ability to compete. Small mistakes continue to plague us every time we made a mistake the turned it into points.”
Army, which beat St. Bonaventure on Friday night, got three tries from fullback Andy Sullivan and two from wing Nathan Williams as they tested UB on the outside. Lock Connor Parker, prop Eli Brown, and center Jeff Malm-Annan also scored tries for West Point, which improved to 4-0 in the conference.
And in another lopsided game, Penn State hammered Delaware 97-5.
Penn State led 57-5 at halftime with Mike Eife scoring two tries and Ryan McNulty doing the same. Eife scored two more in the second half and Chris Burian scored two make it three on the day for him. Jimmy Ronan converted seven tries and added a try of his own for 19 points. Mike Dabulas converted the final three tries.
