It was a close one, but the Serra Rugby Padres edged Bishop O'Dowd Saturday to win the Northern California D1 School Championship.
These two teams had met a week ago and Serra won 47-19. However, the Dragons tested the Padres at every turn.
Serra pulled it out 31-29.
Serra scored three tries in the first half for a comfortable lead.
It was a fairly busy week for top-of-the-rankings teams. Here's how several of the higher-ranked teams did.
Current #1-ranked school team is Torrey Pines, and they played and won the Southern California school final on Wednesday over Orange Lutheran.
As a weekend preview this isn't much of one as one of the games was already played.
Torrey Pines won the Southern California School League with a midweek victory over Orange Lutheran 43-13.
This sets up an All-California final for the Falcons. On March 14 they will face the winner of this weekend's St. Francis vs Rio Americano Northern California final.
Rio Americano and Jesuit of Sacramento both logged wins as the Northern California single-school league wrapped up league play.
Rio American won, as expected, 46-7 over a St. Ignatius side that played well and had their moments, but ended up winless in the league this year.
We could call this weekend the official start of the high school season.
That’s a little unfair, of course, as several leagues have been playing for a while, but in parts of the country where it snows, the beginning of March is the beginning of for-realsies.
