Utah Leads Boise State 7s Field
In the second of two college 7s tournaments playing in the Pacific Northwest this weekend, Boise State hosts nine teams in two pools.
The University of Utah is the highest-profile program in this tournament, and the Utes will bring three squads to the event.
Also from outside the PNW is University of Nevada-Reno, which joins Utah and Utah-3 in Pool A along with Idaho State and Boise State-2. Boise State heads up Pool B along with BYU-Idaho, Utah-2 (not to be ignored as they will likely be as strong as Utah-1), and College of Idaho.
Teams will play a round robin, with the top squads from each pool playing in the final. The #2 teams from each pool will play for the Plate, #3s for the Bowl.
"We are excited to bring three teams in," said Utah Head Coach Mark Drown. "We are going to mix the first two teams pretty evenly, because I want to see what players will work their way into the 1st team for the later tournaments."
Utah will play in the Battle in the Bay and the PAC Conference 7s.
"We're excited about this tournament in Boise because it's a good location for us, and we've committed to coming back next year."
The Utes will run out a younger team for their 3rd side. The roster for Utah has more than doubled over last year's thanks to the whole team from last season returning, a good freshman class, and players returning from religious mission. Still they have their challenges. with Nata Lauti and Danny Christensen out inured. In their stead Taylor Thomas, who, ironically, is from Boise, will captain the Utes.
