GRR: State Championship
For the fifth year in a row, Divine Savior Holy Angels and Catholic Memorial will meet in the Wisconsin Girls High School State Championship. But there is a whole slate of games ready to take place this Sunday, Oct. 25 in Milwaukee.
The Michigan girls high school league is poised to kick off this weekend, and the big question will be: Can Grandville repeat its first-ever state championship, or will traditional power Traverse City reclaim the top spot? Grandville finds itself in a similar state as last year in terms of depth and experience, but the young program has proven that the rebuilding process doesn’t have to get in
North Suburban won the Minnesota Girls High School State 7s Championship, bettering longtime powerhouse Armstrong 29-10 in the final. Armstrong had defeated Hopkins 36-7 in the semifinals, while North Suburban blanked a combination side of Orono, South Metro, and Minnetonka 51-0 for the title berth.
Leading into the Minnesota girls state final, Armstrong coach Jimmy Hanson anticipated one of the best championship matches that the league has seen in a long time. Hanson proved prophetic, as his side had to rally from a first-half deficit to eventually overcome North Suburban 31-17 – a score that belies the intensity and competitiveness of the game itself.
The Vermont Girls U19 Championship brought all the heat that one hopes for in a state final: two teams both capable of a title, a tight score, and a little bit of history to make winning the trophy that more rewarding. When finalists Rutland and Essex met during the regular season, the former won 37-22 – its first in two years.
