Zebras, Rugby Players, and Spicy Chicken
We asked USA U20 coach some questions about what the players were doing in their off times in Zimbabwe, and our first question was this: Does everyone have a pet Zebra?
Stephenson, understanding of course that we’re just having fun, answered in kind: Yes, everyone has a pet Zebra!
OK, not really (you didn’t think they … oh never mind). The USA players have a lot of work to do in the World Rugby U20 Trophy, but rugby tours are also cultural experiences, and so the players are also getting a look at the country of Zimbabwe.
The players shook off the jet lag thanks in part to the coaching staff’s plan to adjust their circadian clocks. That worked nicely. The players have been enjoying the food and say it’s been good (although they got a little spoiled after the Hong Kong match with a trip to a Nando’s spicy chicken restaurant, which was a big hit).
So far the players have been to Wild is Life, an animal sanctuary where they got up-close with giraffes and elephants. There have been movie nights, some cricket, and the weekly Fine Night (or Kangaroo Court) where players get nailed for silly transgressions.
It’s all part of building the team, and keeping them comfortable.
So now, mom and dad, about that new zebra enclosure you have to build …
