Women's Olympic Rugby Draw
Women's Olympic Rugby Draw
The USA will be in Pool A of the Women's Rugby 7s event at the Olympic Games in Rio.
The draw was confirmed on Tuesday, June 28 in an announcement in Rio de Janeiro. The women's rugby 7s competition will be held August 6 to 8 at the Deodoro Olympic Park. The 12 teams in the competition were seeded based on World Series finish in the last two years, or by World Rugby if they didn't play in the World Series. Then the seeds were assigned their pools, Seed #1 in Pool A, #2 in Pool B, and #3 in Pool C. Then #4 was put in Pool C, and the assignments weaved back and forth through the pools.
So this is how it came out:
Pool A
Austraia
USA
Fiji
Colombia
Pool B
New Zealand
France
Spain
Kenya
Pool C
Canada
Great Britain
Brazil
Japan
This is a good draw for the USA, as the Eagles have the ability to beat Australia and should likely beat Fiji and Colombia (interestingly, on the Colombia team is Nathalie Marchino, a former Eagle who took advantage of the World Rugby Olympic dispensation to switch countries).
The top eight go into the quarterfinals, so the top two from each pool, plus the two best 3rd-place teams will enter the knockout rounds with a shot at a medal. So points difference will be crucial for many teams.
The toughest pool is likely Pool C, where it will be a massive clash between Canada and Great Britain.
