Stephan Herbst, who was just named Head Coach at Walsh University, has been severely injured while playing Rugby League for the NCR Ruby League All-Stars Vegas 9s Rugby League Festival in Nevada.

As part of a promotional deal with National Rugby League (NRL) in Australia, which runs an annual event in Las Vegas, NCR put together an all-star team that they selected after NCR's Rugby Union all-star weekend. The idea was to offer scouting opportunities for these players who might want to play professional Rugby League.

However, Rugby League and Rugby Union have some fundamental differences in how they are played and officiated. One of the key differences is the offside line. When a tackle occurs, the team with possession has the tackled player stand up and heel the ball back to a scrumhalf (called the dummy half) who runs or passes.

Meanwhile, the defense retreats to five meters from the tackle. When the ball is out, the defense advances quickly, and the ballcarriers do also. It results, very often, in a massive collision of bodies. This is not to judge whether that's a good idea or not, but it is fundamentally different from Rugby Union.

The second major difference is that what would be considered a high or dangerous tackle in Union is not considered high or dangerous in League. A tackle high on the shoulder that slides up into the head area is not necessarily considered a dangerous tackle in Rugby League.

So we come to the Vegas 9s (9-a-side) tournament. The NCR team was made up of Union players with little or zero experience in Rugby League. Herbst was carrying the ball  in NCR's game against United SC, a team of professional Rugby League players that plays in the 9s Premier League.

Herbst was hit high and at a high rate of speed, and appeared to be knocked conscious. According to eyewitness evidence, he appeared to go into seizure on the field, and was attended on the field and then taken to a local hospital.

It is clear, whatever the specific medical details, that Herbst had suffered a traumatic brain injury was in serious trouble. According to reports he remains hospitalized and in the ICU in Las Vegas.

Representatives of the NRL and NCR moved quickly to do what they could, with NCR representatives staying in the hospital with Herbst, and NRL reportedly paying for Herbst's mother to be flown in from South Africa. The collegiate rugby community at large is starting to get wind of this incident and is reaching out to help Herbst.

The positive news is that thanks to Herbst's youth and physical fitness, he is on track to make a full recovery (again, according to the reports we have heard). It will take some time, but he is expected to be back on his feet and coaching.

Walsh University Director of Rugby Jason Fox will be running the program in Herbst's absence but told GRR that Stephan Herbst will be returning to his post as Coach at Walsh following his rehab. The program itself will continue playing and growing while Herbst is recovering.
