Utah Lions Win Denver 7s
The Utah Lions took the Boys HS Division at the Denver 7s this past weekend.
Utah fielded two teams - Blue and White - and won for the second straight year.
Between them, the two Lions teams lost only once, with the Blue team taking 1st and the White team losing to the Rocky Mountain Rebels in the semis, and coming in 3rd.
The Rebels of Littleton, Colo. did well to rebound from a loss to Utah Lions White in pool play to win the semis 21-19, punishing Utah errors.
Meanwhile, Utah Lions Blue were rarely tested and defeated Denver-area team East HS 24-12 in the semis.
So on to the final for Utah Blue against the Rebels. The Lions led 7-5 at halftime thanks to a try from captain Kaymahn Siufanua of Lone Peak HS, which Siufanua converted. Both teams brought in the subs in the second half with the altitude and heat taking its toll. Ma’afu Mahina of Hunter HS, Gavan Kirton of United, and Kyler Burch of Herriman all made impacts for the Lions. Burch scored two tries on big runs and good support play to secure a 21-12 victory.
The Utah Lions White team slammed East 40-12 to take this, with two tries each from Alma Schoenfeld (Olympus HS) and Taylor Robinson (Alta HS), and tries also from Colin Snow (Herriman HS), Kody Jacobsen (Snow Canyon HS), Evan Wilson (Davis HS), and Keagan Barnes (Bingham HS).
Next up for the Lions will be the Victoria International Youth 7s in Victoria, BC, where they will take on three top academy teams from British Columbia, plus the EIRA national team, and an EIRA team from Washington.
