USA Men Picked for Pan-Am Games
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – USA Men's 7s Head Coach Mike Friday has named his squad for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto next week, and he has made some changes.
It's been a long season for some players on the USA 7s team, and with a few being called up to the USA 15s team for the Pacific Nations Cup, Friday has called on some other players in residency at the Olympic Training Center. Zack Test, Andrew Durutalo, Danny Barrett, Chris Wyles, and Folau Niua are all with the USA 15s team, while Maka Unufe gets some time off.
Madison Hughes returns as captain of the squad, and also returning from the squad that qualified for the Olympics by winning the NACRA 7s last month are Perry Baker, Garrett Bender, Carlin Isles, Nate Augspurger, and Martin Iosefo.
Friday had 17 players try out for the team, including four not in residency. US Army officers Ben Leatigaga and Will Holder, part of the Department of Defense's World Class Athlete Program, make the cut, as do previously capped 7s Eagles Mike Te’o and Stephen Tomasin. Brett Thompson, who has not played much rugby of any sort since an injury last fall, and who just missed out on selection to the NACRA 7s, also is picked. Thompson is on the 15s Pacific Nations Cup roster, but needs to game time.
Patrick Blair, who saw time with the USA 7s team this World Series season, also makes the team.
The USA will face Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay in pool play Saturday, July 11, before the eight teams are re-seeded for the Sunday knockout rounds. The Eagles took Bronze in the first Pan-Am Games rugby competition in 2011.
