UCF Heads SIRC 7s After Day 1

Day One at the SIRC 7s is over and Central Florida is once again a power in the region.

UCF won all four of their pool games, giving up not more than a try in each and winning comfortably in every game.

Florida State finished 2nd in Pool A with a 3-1 record. Meanwhile in Pool B, Georgia Tech didn’t lose a game, but ended up 2nd in their pool because they tied two matches, while Florida International finished 3-1. Thus FIU took the pool on points difference.

The teams are re-seeded after today’s games for Sunday’s knockout round.

With Florida Atlantic not able to play, their games were all forfeits. That essentially leaves Georgia Southern without an opponent, but that will be fixed on Sunday.

Georgia Southern wins by default over FAU. Meanwhile, South Florida plays Memphis and Middle Tennessee State plays Kennesaw State. The losing teams in those two games play, with the loser of that game finishing 9th, and the winner playing Georgia Southern for 7th (the Shield).

The winners of the USF/Memphis and MTSU/MSU games will play off for 5th (the Bowl).

In the championship semis, the re-seeding means teams in the same pool end up playing once more. Florida International will play Georgia Tech, a team they lost 14-12 to on Saturday. Meanwhile Central Florida plays Florida State, a team they beat 28-7 Saturday afternoon.

The losing teams from those semis will play for 3rd (the Plate), while the winners will play for the SIRC title.

The winning team from this tournament earns a spot in the USA Rugby Collegiate 7s National Championships.
