Still Tight In Florida; Wolverines Win Big
Still Tight In Florida; Wolverines Win Big
It remains very tight in Florida's high school league after this week's action.
Key Biscayne got a bit of a surprise at Wellington. Cardinal Gibbons stepped into the fray. (We had Gibbons winning their opener but that was an error based on reporting from other sources—Okapi won that game 28-10). And Jacksonville returned to winning ways.
Key Biscayne's 25-19 loss at Wellington showed that Wellington's two competitive losses were actually a reflection of their potential. Key Biscayne had a chance to maybe take sole possession of 1st in the league, but Wellington started far better in the game. They managed to neutralize the Rats' game plan. In the second half, Key Biscayne mounted a comeback, but despite their best efforts and a very strong game from No.8 Santiago Cortabarria, they fell short.
"The boys had a great attitude," said Key Biscayne Head Coach Javier Casserly, "but it was not enough."
At the same time, the Jacksonville Wolverines improved to 3-1 with a comprehensive 38-3 win over the Cape Pirates, who slip to 0-4.
(We had Tampa beating Naples but that score was misreported to us. Naples won and moved to 3-0 as a result.)
Head Coach Aaron Church said "it was a good bounce back from last week," he said his team was more focused.
Flyhalf Macrae Taylor scored a try and kicked four conversions for 13 points, while Ellis Davis kept up his streak of scoring a try in every game so far this year. Wings Myles Johnson and Taj Gonsalves and locks Quinton Owens and Aiden Chakrabortty touched down as well. The game was quite close at halftime, 14-3, but Jacksonville's fitness and depth saw them pull away.
"Our focus was to be better on launching defense aggressively and move the ball quickly on offense," said Church. "I feel we did a good job on both going into the second half of our season."
And Okapi, after losing their opener to Jacksonville, have reeled off three straight victories to move to 3-1 and even with points difference take into account are locked with the Wolverines on top.
There is still plenty of rugby to be played in the Sunshine State, and with winning on the road being fairly tough, this league promises to to be tough to seed.
