Silverback Power Index: West Coast Consolidation

Army knocked off Lindenwood. Life fell to St. Mary’s. Now, Cal and St. Mary’s top the Power Index Rankings.

We have yet to see the Golden Bears in 15s and will have to wait until February 19 (vs #9 Arizona) for them to defend their top ranking. 

If you're salivating at the thought of a Cal-St. Mary’s matchup, both teams will need to hold their ranking until March 26 to deliver the #1 vs #2 clash.

How are the NCR Brackets Doing?

The Power Index had a crack at picking the NCR brackets. So far, the Index has 14 correct picks from 27 (52%). Is this a bad sign for the Index? We don’t think so – we’re actually very encouraged by this.

The Index is a perfect four from four in the DI Bracket. This seems to indicate the Index’s failings at the DIAA and DII level might be down to the dataset. We have several years’ worth of match data on the eight teams in the D1 bracket. By comparison, we only have 2021 data on the DIAA and DII bracket.

Another challenge at these levels is incomplete datasets. We data dump on Tuesdays. Most weeks, we are missing match data on 10-20% of these DIAA and DII matches. How do we fix this? We need help from the clubs to report scores through competition management systems and on their social media promptly. At the governing body level, the top of our Christmas list is for USA Rugby and NCR to come together to establish a unified Competition Management System; enabling better reporting on the college game and thus better exposure for the game!
