Rowan Wins MARC

Rowan College won the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference Sunday with a 39-10 defeat of rivals Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Both teams had played and won semifinals on Saturday, and knew they had a tough game ahead of them on Sunday.

The teams were tied 10-10 at halftime, but in the second half, Rowan darted using the kicking skills of Justin Daisy and Mike Ehrlich to pin IUP back. That worked nicely and Kris Raso and Matt Bettin chased well on those kicks to make it tough for IUP.

“Our forwards dominated the scrums again,” said co-captain JC Carr. “We got a great push from the tight five.”

Hooker Larry Quinn stole some put-ins as well. Ehrlich scored two tries and added two penalty goals and four conversions for 24 points. Carr, Sean Carberry, and Sam Touroonjian scored tries for Rowan, which named Ehrlich player of the game and freshman James Higginbotham as the game’s hardest worker.

Both Rowan and IUP have a place in the national playoffs. IUP will be in a play-in game against the NECRC runner-up, while Rowan opens up in the Round of 16 against the Rugby Northeast champion.
