Rough Pool Play for USA in Paris

Pool Play at the Paris 7s was, for the second tournament in a row, not the best of news for the USA, as the Eagles finished 1-2.

It all started with difficulty as Argentina dominated in the opener on Friday, scoring three tries in the first half and three in the second to win 36-0. The Argentineans just took the Eagles apart.

Saturday saw a few more struggles as the USA played an in-form French side. At least they got some points this time. Perry Baker got the USA going just two minutes in, but France hit for three tries in the first half to lead 19-7, and added another early in the second half. Zack Test scored the USA's second try, but by then there was no time to mount a meaningful comeback.

That left old rivals Canada and a chance to salvage things. And in this game the USA struck quickly through Test and Maka Unufe, and kept up the pressure. Unufe's second gave the USA a 21-0 lead (with the conversion from Madison Hughes). Canada scored late in the first half, but Hughes and then Folau Niua touched down in the second period to cap a 33-12 domination.

It was an encouraging result after two sub-par performances.

So the USA faces Portugal in the Bowl Quarterfinals on Sunday, with the kickoff at Stade Jean Bouin at 1:29am PT, 4:29amET.
