We're entering the playoff period for most fall-playing D1AA conferences and some crucial playoff-deciding regular season games, and fans have a much better idea of who could challenge for a major championship.

Remember, we have NCR and CRAA going on. CRAA's D1AA playoffs are in the spring, but the Heart of America wraps up its championship in the fall. NCRC is also playing in the fall (as well as the spring) and have just started.

Meanwhile, we've got about six weeks remaining in the NCR fall season, so everything seems to matter.

So, here's where we stand.

CRAA Conferences

In CRAA, Central Washington entered into D1AA for the first time after the team's varsity level was taken away last spring. The Wildcats played their first conference game this past weekend, beating a very tough Oregon side 31-21.

Taine Jones captained the side and club president Quaid Hunt was a big part of the win at tighthead prop. Jones, Hunt, scrumhalf Malakai Tacbian, and lock Nick Powell are the only players left over from last year's CWU side. All are in their senior year.

"The win over the weekend was a big success for the team," said CWU Head Coach Emilio Carranza. "The club members have worked hard since May just to make competing this season possible, so getting to experience a full game day because of their efforts was a huge milestone for rugby at Central.

"Oregon played some excellent rugby and really challenged us, which made the result even more rewarding. The team had to dig deep to pull off the win, and we’re excited to keep building from here."

Iowa beat Wayne State 30-17 to move to 4-0 in the Heart of America North. This was a crucial game for both, as Wayne State could have secured a semifinal place with a win. Instead Iowa clinched a semifinal spot and while the Hawkeyes are currently in 2nd in the standings behind Iowa State, ISU has finished their regular-season schedule and Iowa has one more game.

Iowa is favored to win their last game and take 1st in the HOA North. Next week Oklahoma takes on Kansas State in a game that decides who joins Kansas (UHSP could potentially sneak past both but their game with Arkansas from this past weekend was postponed).

NCR Conferences

As we mapped out, LSU almost beat Kentucky in the SCRC and only a late try kept UK in 1st in the SCRC West.

LSU Shakes Up SCRC With Tie vs Kentucky

That sets up the semifinals in that conference with Kentucky facing Clemson and LSU taking on Tennessee.

In the Lonestar, Sam Houston State has handled a coaching change and beat Baylor to set up a clash with Texas A&M. The winner should be 1st in the conference while Texas vs Texas State will decide who is 3rd. Those four should be the semifinalists.

Another big game comes up in the MAC, with Bowling Green vs Western Michigan. The winner will be 2nd in the MAC and the loser 3rd. Of course that would mean they just play each other again anyway in the semifinals. Cincinnati's big win over Ohio sets them up for 4th; they will play Louisville in the semis.

They also play Louisville this coming weekend.

UNC Charlotte remains atop the Southern Conference after an impressive 70-7 win over Lander. NC State is right behind them.

Captain and No. 8 Wayne Robinson was outstanding again, scoring four tries. Scrumhalf Mick Keough scored 23 points on a try, six conversions, and two penalty goals.

"I think we’re starting to click in attack," said Head Coach Robert McCachren. "We’ve only allowed six tries to whole season so we’ve been very good defensively but now the offense is coming along as well which makes us even more dangerous."

Delaware's 50-24 victory over Temple put them in control in the MARC North. At 4-0 the Blue Hens are comfortably in front. In the South it's down to West Chester and Virginia Tech. Those two met up with Virginia Tech winning 46-31 to go to 3-0.

Senior captain and fullback Cooper Anderson and wing Lucas Bichy have been scoring threats all season while the prop pairing of Conrad Clever and Samson Stanley have set the tone up front.

Having beaten West Chester, the Hokies face St. Joseph's (who lost to West Chester in a close one) to clinch 1st in the MARC South.

And, finally, in the Liberty the big game is this coming weekend, with the high-scoring Boston College Eagles playing the high-scoring Northeastern Huskies. The winner of that match secures the #1 seed in the conference playoffs, with the losing team having to potentially dropping to 3rd after Babson plays UMass.

With Yale taking on 1-4 Binghamton, we could see Yale move to 3rd. Most likely you will see the semifinalists be Northeastern, Boston College, Babson, and Yale. But it's not set in stone. If UMass beats Babson, we could see the Minutemen move up. Buffalo is now 3-2 and has a game with 0-5 Niagara and should end up with 20 standings points.

So Yale cannot afford to look past Binghamton at all.
