Charlotte Catholic and Marvin Ridge both logged victories in the North Carolina single-school league Friday.
Charlotte Catholic was favored over South Meck but really had to work for it 31-7.
“South Meck played fantastic, gutsy rugby and really never allowed us to settle into a rhythm,” said CC Head Coach Jason Zehmke. “All credit to Coach Rick and the boys. We have a lot of work to do heading into San Diego on our structures and communication across the field.”
Charlotte Catholic travels to California next week to face Cathedral Catholic (who won big Saturday in league play).
Yellow cards didn’t help Charlotte Catholic but they managed to defend well and keep South Meck to one try.
Meanwhile, Marvin Ridge edged Huskies Rugby out of the Hough area 14-12. The Huskies felt they had the possession and the opportunities to score, but, Head Coach Bruce Colson said, Marvin’s work in the wet conditions and their defense saw them through.
“As a group we learned a lot from our defeat by Charlotte Catholic,” said Marvin Ridge Head coach Alan Mitchell “We really studied that film and had a couple of great practices which meant we had calloused our minds and bodies going into this game.”
