The USA Men's Rugby Team is dusting themselves off a from a very difficult series of games with Australia XV and getting right back into the Nations Cup.

The USA had slashes where things went right for them in the Australia non-test matches in the USA, but they also found chinks in their armor, especially when it came to finding success in the kicking game against a talented, athletic team that can counter well.

Despite giving up a lot of points, the USA players found some defensive bright spots, especially after the 26-0 start in the second game, whee the Eagles then started to close down the Aussie attack.

All of this was a valuable lessons to a somewhat depleted USA team which enters its European November still somewhat banged up. A full 23 players are unavailable or injured. Rugby fans can be quick to point out that an opposition is under-strength for one reason or another, and often the answer there is, the Eagles play who is in front of them.

An Australia A side is full of seasons pros and players with significant cap totals. But it's easy to overlook the fact that the USA themselves might be missing some players of quality.

That is certainly the case here, with, notably, the latest knock being a hamstring injury to scrumhalf Ruben de Haas which, cruelly, will leave him stuck on 49 caps while he rehabs.

But the players in Europe are the USA team, full stop, and they have plenty of ability.

USA Roster for November Nations Cup

Head Coach Scott Lawrence has a chance to win the Nations Cup Pool A with a good run of results this November.

However, Lawrence said he is not looking past a Hong Kong Chine team that does a good job of keeping hold of the ball and unleashed that in a 42-40 win over Uruguay during the summer.

"Don't forget, this team is building depth," Lawrence said talking about the losses to Australia XV. "How do you become more competitive? You play in those games, and you learn how mistakes impact the game. You learn how consistency needs to be higher for longer periods of play."

As for Hong Kong: "They like to hold on to the ball and play. So [against Australia XV] we defended a lot. You know, we're comfortable in defending for long periods of time now. And so I think that that bodes well."

Lawrence said the USA is only looking toward Hong Kong, but there are three games to play this November, as the Americans take on Romania in Bucharest and Georgia in Tbilisi. Georgia is undefeated in their pool and are likely to win Pool B. If the USA beats Hong Kong China and Romania, but loses to Georgia, the Eagles will be 5-1 and likely the best in Pool A. They will, however, want to see Chile lose or tie in one of their games, and the Condors play Portugal, Spain, and Zimbabwe, the three teams the USA beat in the summer.

Portugal is 2-1 and could overtake Georgia of the Lelos falter in Pool B.

There will be no championship match between the pool winners.
