New and Established Girls Teams Win in SoCal

View Park is always a threat in 7s.

View Park, Fallbrook, Centennial, and Mira Costa have all been showing well in the Southern California Girls season, which is concentrating on 7s in the winter.

View Park came 1st and 2nd in their round robin tournament with Artesia (which finished 3rd) and Harlequins, with both View Park teams going 2-0 against the other two. The View Park defense was stout, allowing just the one try in any game, while Loren Lewis, India Horns, Kiya Dunkley, and Denecia Fernandes all played well.

Next up for View Park is a meeting with a tough Centennial team before the playoffs start. View Park will also, as ICEF, go on to play in the Las Vegas Invitational.

Mira Costa, meanwhile, is a new program that has played surprisingly well. The Mira Costa boys team has been very successful, but this is the first time they've fielded a girls squad, and they have 21 players on the roster. Maria Meola is the captain of the Mustangs. A hockey and lacrosse crossover she's been crucial in starting the Mira Costa team.

The players were new to the game, of course, but with some good athletes, and despite competition from more established winter sports, they've done well, showcasing some fancy play.

"The girls dedication and a will to play got the job done," said program director Duke Dulgarian. "We couldn't be happier with it. Their first year to the sport has been successful."

Repeated scrimmages with View Park has helped Mira Costa hone their skills.

Next up for Mira Costa is a round robin between them, Roosevelt, Roosevelt 2, and Harlequins. Fallbrook, meanwhile, has a game with Westview.
