Men DI College Rankings Week 14

Let's talk about the chasm through the eyes of a Wildcat.

The University of Arizona is certainly an impressive program. They've got good players, good facilities, a good coach, and good on-campus support. All of it is nicely. Arizona has won a few rugby games, including a 55-5 defeat of Santa Clara. Now, remember, Santa Clara beat Stanford, which has started very strong in the Pacific West Conference. Santa Clara still has its eyes on doing well in the California DIA Conference. 

Meanwhile, Arizona goes to Berkeley to play Cal. Now, we didn't expect Arizona to win this game, but indications were they would do OK. They lost 76-0. Meanwhile Life tok on #23 South Carolina, admittedly a little under-manned but still a conference champion. Life won 91-0. BYU played Cal Poly, and won 74-5. St. Mary's beat UCSB 98-3. You see where we're going with this.

There is a massive gap between the best teams and the rest. The good news is, the list of strong teams is growing every year, but the gap, it seems, might be growing, also. We were overrun this week with massive blowouts - the kind that almost tell you nothing. Obviously they say winning team is better than losing team. But is a team that loses to BYU by 60 better than a team that loses by 70? It's almost impossible to know.

A few changes, then in this week's rankings, with Arizona State moving up and Washington, having beaten Western Washington, replacing the Vikes in the Top 50. More to come.
