The marquee game for this week is probably Gonzaga at St. Ignatius.
This is a longtime rivalry where each team provides the other with one of their biggest challenges in the regular season.
This week Gonzaga comes in on a bit of a high, ranked #1 and unbeaten so far with a victory over a very strong Charlotte Cardinals team. St. Ignatius appears to be a work in progress, as they have a couple of big wins under their belts, but also a somewhat humbling loss to Pendleton which pointed directly to issues in finishing off scoring chances.
Still, it promises to be a good contest.
Old Rivals Gonzaga and St. Ignatius Meet in Cleveland
Oddly, GRR will not be there as we'll be in St. Louis for the All-Catholic tournament held at SLUH, where we get to see some flyover country talent. There's another tournament going in, as well, with Fairfield Prep hosting a Jesuit tournament that include Massachusetts power BC High. Good to see the Massachusetts teams cross a border.
Other games of note: San Diego Mustangs and SOC Raptors clash in a game that controls seeding to HS Nationals (we're pretty sure both have been invited at this point). In Pennsylvania Cumberland Valley takes on GGA and St. Joe's plays La Salle. All of those teams won last week.
Time for a Rant
OK so we try really hard to give you all the HS games this week. We miss games all the time. There's a reason for that—almost every league or state uses a different system. USA Rugby's Xplorer App has a really good (if you use it) system for tracking leagues and games. You can have scorers and scoring timelines in there, which any league should be tracking and, of course, saves us time. Several states use it, although some use it differently than others. Some have each round of competition listed separately for each weekend. Some list every game of the season under one round, so you have to scroll down.
That's not much a big deal, but it just goes to show you how people can use even a standard interface differently.
A second issue within Xplorer is when people don't use it completely. No lineups. No scorers. Here's a scoring summary from one game from last week in RugbyPA:
That's not helpful.
Our other issue with Xplorer is how leagues name their leagues. Few think of it in terms of those who follow more than one competition.
Here's a look at a screenshot of part of our competition list on Xplorer:
Well that's not very specific. "Boys Single School Varsity" is ... where?
This is better:
Much, MUCH more specific. Kudos.
And then we've got the leagues that track their results via Google Sheets, the ones that track them privately and then post a PDF with their standings ... if they remember, the leagues that rely on referee scheduling to track scores, and the leagues that use Matchfacts. Don't have much against Matchfacts, except that the individual scorers aren't recorded ... it's just that it's yet another thing to track. Can't we all just use Xplorer?
