We could call this weekend the official start of the high school season.

That’s a little unfair, of course, as several leagues have been playing for a while, but in parts of the country where it snows, the beginning of March is the beginning of for-realsies.

The Carolina Ruggerfest is a major event for teams in North Carolina and farther afield. We’ve got Okapi bringing multiple age groups from Florida. And while, yes, Charlotte Cardinals, Charlotte Tigers, Raleigh Redhawks and Rattlesnakes are all there, out-of-state will include Fort Hunt, Wando, West End, Benedictine (VA), Rebels, Key Biscayne, and even such snowbound teams as Green Bay out of Wisconsin and Edina out of Minnesota.

Goff Rugby Report will be there to check it out.

Elsewhere teams are getting on the field with some important crossover matches.

Defending National Single-School Champions St. Ignatius will be playing two, hosting Bishop Dwenger out of Indiana—Dwenger has an experienced and very capable side—and following that up with a Sunday league game at a St. Xavier team that has a ton of potential.

Gonzaga will play Gregory the Great in a game that, last year, was a harbinger of how the season would go for both.

St. Edward out of Ohio plays Toledo, while Xavier out of New York heads to LaSalle College HS in Pennsylvania.

Southern California sees the Premier School Final between Orange Lutheran and Torrey Pines. That promises to be a barnburner.

Playoffs and Key Results in California School Leagues

The other side of the single-school coin is the Multi-School division. San Clemente takes on Oceanside.

In Northern California, De La Salle can likely secure a top-two spot in the school league with a victory over Jesuit. Rio Americano is favored to win their game, and we’ll see then three teams at 3-1.

Points difference is the tiebreaker and St. Francis (with a bye and already at 3-1) should be fine there. DLS has the edge of Rio for now.

However, the Marauders at Jesuit could easily win this game and make the point moot.

The NorCal club scene sees Granite Bay and Danville heat things up considerably. Both have been getting warmup games and Granite Bay certainly seems to have some confidence. But this is a good rivalry match for both.

Louisiana, Texas (club), Arizona, and Florida are still going. Missouri kicks off, and so, in rather impressive fashion, does Colorado.
