Lindenwood Women Impressive in Victory

The Lindenwood women after they shut out Southern Nazarene.

Lindenwood University women's rugby put in an impressive performance Sunday, defeating the defending NCR D1 champion Southern Nazarene in emphatic fashion in St. Charles, Mo.

Five tries from the front row and a strong defensive effort saw the Lions beat the Crimson Storm 51-0.

Hard carries from the forwards led to tighthead prop Jasmine Fehoko powering over in the first few minutes. And while SNU's scramble defense made some very good players early on, soon it would be clear that it would be Lindenwood's day.

Led by Ava Reuter at No. 8, Lindenwood continued to test the SNU D and off a scrum inside the Crimson Storm's 22, it was Reuter who charged on through to set it up for quick ball to Jennie Weiner. The loosehead prop powered through and it was 10-0.

Reuter got a try of her own off a quick tap, and then a snappy run from Mia Saige Topasna got Lindenwood back into scoring position. Weiner was there, taking the pass from scrumhalf Sofia Florio and then carrying or driving four defenders over the line for her second.

A quick tap on another penalty from Florio set up Fehoko for her second and the Lindenwood front row had four tries in the first half.

More extended pressure from Lindenwood allowed Reuter to score her second. This one was converted and Lindenwood had a commanding lead of 32-0 at the halftime break.

In the second half Southern Nazarene ramped up their intensity, and with a yellow card to the Lions they had the player advantage.

But even so Lindenwood kept scoring. At 53 minutes a nice give-and-go movement between Fehoko and Weiner set up the latter for her third. Anna Wright raced in for her first and now it was 44-0.

Back to full strength, more penalties hit Lindenwood and they got two yellow cards in relatively quick succession. Still their defense held.

And as time ticked away some quick ball and snappy passing set up Kanani Watts for the final try.

Joseline Lopez converted and it was 51-0.

Clearly Lindenwood dominated this game. They were more powerful in contact, they were faster, and they were more connected.

But also the Lions have changed their approach a bit based on their talent available. This front row of Weiner, Domi Platts, and Fehoko was really strong, and their second row of Sarin Rowland and Evie Danhoff was pretty good, too.

With such a good forward pack Lindenwood can stifle teams. And, it turns out, score tries.
