The Liberty Patriots defeated the Eastside Lions 29-20 Saturday to claim the Rugby Washington Boys HS championship.

This game was played at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila as part of a weekend of high-level rugby surrounding the Seattle Seawolves MLR game.

It was a well-contested match and a rematch of the regular-season meeting from May 2 which Liberty had taken 28-7.

However, Eastside was looking to fix a couple of things and challenged Liberty offensively.

The Patriots opened the scoring with a penalty goal only for the Lions to respond with an unconverted try and a 5-3 lead.

Liberty continued to play aggressive defense and looked for their forwards to control possession.

It started to pay off.

Flanker Dylan Martin and prop Stan Moi Moi both powered over and that started a run that put Liberty in some semblance of control.

When Center Ave Toso waced in, Liberty had a 29-15 lead.

As the second half wore on, Eastside scored to inch closer. But the conversion would have put them within one score. It didn't go over, Liberty held a 29-20 lead, and held on from there.

The Patriots were led well by co-captains Marek Wright at fullback and Rohan Twohey at No. 8. these two started playing tackle rugby as 1st-graders, and this game wrapped up their 12th season as teammates.

For Liberty this was the culmination of a long period where they have repeatedly come in second, but haven't quite made it to the top. That frustration helped drive them to a title.
