Iowa State and Wayne State are atop the Heart of American CRAA D1AA Conference after both won well over the weekend.
Iowa State defeated longtime rivals Iowa 39-20 to move to 2-0.
"Iowa is a tough team," said ISU Head Coach Ant Frein. "They've got some dudes. But we're stout this year."
Jack Cahill was a force at center, leading especially in the defense.
"Iowa is pretty dynamic in their backline and Jack took on the responsibility of running the defense and probably made a dozen tackles. This was our first real test on the road and we put in a pretty clean performance ... up until the last 15 minutes."
The additional thing with Iowa State is that Frein has taken on the education information that USA Head Coach Scott Lawrence has made available for coaches.
"We really emphasize what Scott has put out," he said. Add to that some additional coaching and leadership pieces—Brock Kluempers has transferred from Central Washington and he provides experience, maturity, and his father, former Eagle Tim Kluempers, as an assistant coach.
"Between Jack, Zach English, and Brock, these guys keep a level of professionalism high on the team," said Frein.
