gvsu vs svsu 2019 cam mcgloughlin action

Grand Valley State remains on top of the Great Lakes Conference after beating Saginaw Valley State 65-19 Saturday.

Grand Valley took a while to get going but after a few words from their captain and coach, the GVSU squad started to pick up the pace.

Captain and No. 8 Cam McLoughlin had a big second half with three tries, while Austin Cochrane, who plays all over the backline, was very effective in finding space either with his pace out wide or his elusiveness in the middle.

Cochrane's kicking game was useful, too and, he found space for his teammates, especially fullback Chase Parker, to chase those kicks down. Cochrane also scored a well-taken long-range try.

Bethel stayed in 2nd place after a forfeit win. So the battle is on for 3rd and 4th. To that end, Ferris State was very impressive in shutting out Calvin College 77-0. Central Michigan kept pace with a 58-10 defeat of Oakland.

CMU showed a very good forward effort with Nick Riggs and Brandon York powering ahead to create space. Centers Brendan Urbanski and AJ Maiorana broke the gainline consistently.

Everyone has two games left, and while Saginaw Valley State lost this past weekend, SVSU is right there in the conversation for a spot in the top four.
