Great Lakes: GVSU, Bethel, CMU Move Forward
Grand Valley State defeated Calvin College 53-32 to move to 4-0 in the Great Lakes men's DII college conference.
Flyhalf Nick Roberts did a nice job at running the GVSU attack, while flanker Tarzan Iam, playing in his first game, was a wild man chasing balcarriers down.
At No. 8, Austin Dewey worked the breakdowns and tackles nicely.
Head Coach John Mullett rested some starters in this game.
"Calvin did a great job in energetically challenging gaps and capitalizing on quite a few opportunities, but our guys also put together some smart, fast wide attacks, which has not really been a strength for us," said Mullett.
Bethel improved to 3-1 with a 32-14 Oakland defeat. Bethel bounced back nicely from the previous week's loss to GVSU. The Bethel scrum was very strong and stole some possession there. No. 8 Cole Sanders and loosehead prop Brendon Murphy were both excellent.
Chasing these two is Central Michigan. CMU handed Saginaw Valley State its first loss this weekend with a 71-7 defeat. CMU got 11 tries from eight different scorers. Colton Potter and Kyle Blaszack were strong in the backs while Nick Riggs and Zak Carter controlled the game nicely in the forwards.
At 2-2 CMU is still behind SVSU (3-1), but Saginaw still has Grand Valley and Bethel to play, as well as Ferris State.
