The Daytona HS rugby team made a huge statement this weekend with a 48-10 defeat of a highly-regarded Orlando squad to move to 2-0 in the Florida Boys HS Northern Pool.

After winning their opener 20-5 over Riviera Beach, the Coconuts really hit their stride against Orlando. Both Naples and Key Biscayne continued their winning ways, albeit in different ways. The Bears of Naples just edged Boca Raton 13-10, while the Rats continued to celebrate their inaugural season with some exciting rugby, scoring 69 on the Mavericks.

The South 2 pool is all clumped up as two teams are 1-1 and two are 0-1-1. In The South 3, they finally got to play, and Weston recorded an impressive result, 31-0 over Jupiter.

"It was a good game for us," said Weston Coach Corey Carter. "We know this is a competitive league, but we came out of our preseason games having won all but one, which we tied. We have some new talent in the pack and we just nee dto concentrate on our fundamentals and not get ahead of ourselves."

Weston was led by outside center John Powers and Alex Ruiz at scrumhalf. Captain and No. 8 Alex Gomez had an inspirational game and also scored a try.

So early days yet, but Weston get to face 2-0 Cape Pirates next week. Daytona opens the season for Cardinal Gibbons, and Key Biscayne meets the other new team, St. Thomas Aquinas.
