Early Statements Needed: DIA Games This Weekend
Early Statements Needed: DIA Games This Weekend
It's a full weekend of D1A action this weekend. Here's a look at what's up:
Rocky Mountain
BYU is at Colorado State in an early clash of two teams with conference hopes. We have a closer look at Colorado State, and the Rams have a ton of potential, but BYU's ability to reload and maintain has always been strong.
Air Force looks to rebound from a loss last week as the Zoomies host New Mexico.
Big 10
Indiana players University of Notre Dame on Friday and IUPUI on Saturday in two non-conference games. Notre Dame is running through an independent schedule, and so every game is a potential playoff game—if the Irish are ever thinking of the spring playoffs, they need to show well every time out.
For Indiana, an early loss to Iona was followed up with a shutout of Western Michigan last week. Head Coach Justin Goonan said WMU made things challenging and his side is still trying to maintain continuity and momentum on attack. Starting five freshman, Indiana has some work to do to get everyone working together, but first-year Will Chevalier is starting to make some breaks and Chase Cranfill is a talent at tighthead.
Max Ney is looking good at flanker and backs Mike Nettleton and Case Fleck are playing well, especially in the kicking game. But the pieces have to come together.
Ohio State has a non-conference game, as well, with a clash with a strong DIAA team in Kentucky, and Wisconsin is slated to play another DIAA team, Lindenwood-Belleville.
Liberty
Just about everyone is in action. Iona plays anon-conference game against Navy, and UConn plays Dartmouth in a very difficult game. But 14 other teams are in action. Friday's Fordham at Rutgers is one to watch.
Rugby East
Kutztown looked very good in beating Mary Washington 36-8. For Head Coach Gregg Jones, it was especially gratifying because he's been without some players due to injury. Seven players arrived on campus wiht injuries sustained during the summer. Three of them will be on the bench against Army, but his Bears managed without those players against UMW.
Jones said he was very pleased with his team's defensive effort, and praised UMW as a strong team that tested his players. But he also said his team could have come away with a few more tries.
Key for Kutztown has been some coaching help. Byron Hayward, who will be Wayne Pivac's defense coach when Pivac takes over the Wales job after the World Cup, will be in town to help with the Kutztown defensive game. And they already had respected Irish coach Dermot O'Neill to help out, too.
Penn State is at Notre Dame College, and it's a very experienced Penn State squad lining up against the Falcons. With Noah Smith, Anthony Adamcheck, and Thomas Capriotti, Penn State has one of the better front rows in the business. Will Lyke is back from injury and part of a strong back row with Joe Freeman and Peter Jean. Brendan Collum and Michael Jennings are a very capable second row.
With such a strong pack, Penn State is in solid position, and they have regulars all through the backline. This is a team to be wary of.
