One of the interesting surprises in Men's DIAA college rugby is that there's an impression held by some in the East that most of the season is played in the fall.
That's not exactly the case, given that the Gold Coast, Pacific West, NCRC, and Mountain States all start in the winter, and the Heart of America and Ivy League (playoffs, anyway) finish off in the spring.
This past week, in the Gold Coast, there wasn't much going on, but San Diego did win a game, and we've got some notes on what's going on in that conference here - Gold Coast Latest - USD Wins. In the Pac West, Chico State won, and UC Davis won big, as usual, and those two teams sit at 3-0. Those two teams are certainly on a collision course.
In the NCRC, the big news was that Washington v Oregon was supposed to tell us who was the stronger team, and in the end, it told us not much as the two teams tied. Both are still chasing Western Washington.
In the South Independent, FIU faltered a week ago and then got their game postponed. We talked to them anyway here. MTSU won big, and so it looks as if the conference will come down to Florida International against Middle Tennessee State.
The Heart of America has yet to re-start after the winter break. In the Mountain State, they opened a couple of weeks ago, but everyone got in on the action this past weekend, with Utah Valley and BYU's B side winning big, and Dixie State edging Weber State. (Note, we have made a couple of corrections on the Mountain States standings, incorporating a couple of earlier results we didn't have before.)
In the fall, Notre Dame College went the distance and won the fall playoff. Notre Dame College Wins Fall DIAA. The Falcons will wait for an opponent to play in May, but there is a ton of rugby to be played before that happens.
There will be an eight-team playoff, with the conference champs from the Pacific West, Gold Coast, NCRC, Heart of America, and Mountain States. The Ivy League will hold a playoff to decide a playoff team, and the other spots will be decided via wild card (probably 2nd-place teams from Pac West and another conference.)
