De La Salle won a non-league NorCal game against Granite Bay on a broiling Saturday.

It was 95 degrees and felt hotter on the field. DLS was dealing with a couple of injuries, but were still

Both teams tested each other from the beginning and it wasn't until 10 minutes in that anyone scored—the Grizzlies taking three points on a penalty.

The Spartans pressured off a restart and took a lineout inside Granite Bay's 22. They mauled it over the line, with lock Aidan Filal getting the try. Semisi Manoa converted for the 7-3 lead.

Granite Bay ran their big forwards hard and got another penalty, which, again, they put over. They followed that up with a try and at halftime Granite Bay led 13-7.

DLS regained possession off the second-half kickoff and put Granite Bay under pressure.

Another penalty close to the Granite Bay line, De La Salle flanker Nick Costagliola quick-tapped and got his side close before hooker Mikah Moananu-Apela was over.

Conversion good and it was now 14-13 for the Spartans.

Granite Bay missed a penalty that would have given them the lead, but De La Salle extended their lead with a snappy movement resulting in center Turner Madge racing through a gap to score.

Conversion from Semis was, yet again, accurate and De La Salle led 21-13. Back came Granite Bay and they powered over to make it 21-18.

But they couldn't get closer. De La Salle added a penalty goal, and Granite Bay had a chance to score but lost the ball within five meters of paydirt.

De La Salle held on 24-18.

The Spartans' defense was outstanding, especially in the second half, and when they got turnovers they turned the tables quickly.

"It was a great experience for both teams and Granite Bay were great hosts as always," said DLS Head Coach Derek Holmberg.

De La Salle wraps up their domestic season next week against Marin.

Granite Bay goes on tour but will be back in April to face Lamorinda.
