What's up in Boys HS Rugby this week? Let's have a look:
Southern California
SoCal is, at this time of year, in its single-school heyday, with the playoffs fast approaching, so it's natural to look carefully at this group. The schedule itself is a little disappointing. The Varsity Red LA Division comprises four teams, two of which are very strong, and two of which are not. They play each other twice. Surely there could have been an opportunity to do a San Diego crossover. It would have spiced up the season and given the struggling teams a chance to stretch their legs and maybe win a game or two.
As it is, St. John Bosco (3-0 in league play) and Mira Costa (2-1) are the top two in LA, and will play Redondo Union and View Park Prep (respectively) this weekend, and are favored.
In San Diego's Varsity Red, Torrey Pines, stung after last week's loss to La Costa Canyon has a crucial meeting with Cathedral Catholic. TP is 3-1 and Cathedral 2-1. The battle for top two goes right through this game.
Varsity White (LA) is centered on Carson v Wilson. A bit of a surprise team, Carson has run out to a 4-0 start, and if Wilson want to catch them, it has to be this weekend. In the Varsity White San Diego North league, San Marcos and San Pasqual have close to the same record, and play each other. The winner is in good shape to be 1st, although Mira Mesa (playing Fallbrook) might have something to say about that.
Texas
Things start quietly, but Rock v Cy Fair is an interesting warmup. Katy visits two teams in Louisiana.
Florida
Very early days, but upstart Wellington against Okapi is one to watch as this is a good test for Wellington after a win over Jupiter last week. Cardinal Gibbons started strong, so we'll see how the staying power is.
Northern California
It's time for the Kickoff Tournament.
Arizona
Phoenix beat Red Mountain (!) in a non-league game. So now they face Scottsdale.
