Bowl Series Set for Iona

The Rugby Bowl Series schedule has been set, with 12 college rugby teams facing off this coming weekend at Iona College.

The weekend's action will include six Bowl Games over the course of two days at Iona's Mazzella Field. The weekend will open with hosts Iona taking on American International College. This will be worth the price of admission (if it cost money to see it, which it doesn't). Iona is a DIA Rugby East team that backs down from no one, and has an approach that could match up very will with the high-flying, high-scoring AIC squad.

That game kicks off at 10am.

Next up at noon is Temple v. Mary Washington. This is a quintessential Bowl Game. Mary Washington is good enough to be a DIAA playoff team, but were a little unlucky during the league season and just missed out. Temple pulled off one of the upsets of the year, beating Pitt in the Keystone playoffs. The Owls are another team that just barely missed out on DIAA playoff consideration.

At 2pm on Saturday, Stony Brook takes on Rutgers. These are two teams that have a long history of solid performances. Both have played in the Bowl Series before. Rutgers made the final of the Keystone Conference playoffs, before losing in a tough game to St. Joseph's. Stony Brook made a late surge in the Empire, but a slow start for a young team left them out of the money. But the Seawolves are used to playing in big games and will be a tough competitor for Rutgers.

On Sunday, at 10am, Delaware takes on Fordham in a clash of a DIA team building for something bigger, and a Fordham squad that just missed out on the Empire championship match. Then comes the noon matchup between UMass and Buffalo. UB has been in Rugby East and battling forward through as tough a conference schedule as anyone might expect. Buffalo was 2-5 in the Rugby East, but a competitive 2-5. Meanwhile, UMass finished the ECRC season 5-2 and on this past Saturday beat Fordham in an ECRC-Empire challenge match.

And at 2pm, the final game of the Bow Series will be Binghamton v Loyola. Binghamton won the Empire Conference but opted out of the DIAA playoffs due to how it conflicts with the school schedule. Loyola was unbeaten in their NSCRO conference but opted out of the playoffs to participate in the Bowl Series.

All six games will be webstreamed live here on Goff Rugby Report and also on www.bowlseries.com. There will also be a live preview show on Friday evening, and a Saturday wrapup show.

In addition, a series of HS 7s games will also be played at Iona, with Eagle Impact Rugby Academy NY, Play Rugby USA, FASNY and Keio Academy, Fairfield, New York Rugby Club, and Greenwich High School all facing each other in a series of high-level boys HS games.
