Best-Dressed, Worst Dressed? Clever, and Rugby, Gets Noticed
So you can't please everyone. USA rugby star Todd Clever, who has been at the forefront of helping raise the notoriety of the game in the United States, was at the ESPYs Awards night last night (July 15).
Clever was there in part because he is in ESPN The Magazine's The Body Issue, wearing a rugby ball and little else.
We asked Clever if he got any pointers about modeling from Scott LaValla (previous cover boy for the Stade Francais calendar Les Dieux du Stade), and Clever said he most definitely did, and learned all he could about strategic rugby ball placement from his USA teammate.
That's all well and good - Clever's appearance in the Body Issue is good exposure for American rugby. Then there was the red carpet, where Clever was singled out for his dress sense, getting named one of the best dressed at the show by USA Today, and one of the worst dressed by VH1.
We don't have an opinion, except to note that Tara Lipinski, Peyton Manning, JJ Watt, and Danica Patrick also got dinged by VH1. Clever worse a plaid shirt with a bow tie, which is sort of nerdy-chic, which is apparently in right now. We've seen a lot of athletes get praised for the sartorial choice. We say ... he's in the conversation.
Final note - we also mentioned to Clever that over the years the GRR staff have tried to get People Magazine to put a rugby player in their Most Beautiful People issue. Clever laughed at that, saying he was never going to get in there - he didn't have the face for it.
