Babson lineout vs Northeastern fall 2025.
Babson wins a lineout in a wild game vs Northeastern.

Probably the biggest head-turner result in D1AA over the weekend was Babson eking out a 48-47 win over Northeastern in the Liberty Conference semifinals.

Northeastern had come into the game 6-0 in conference play, outscoring opponents, on average, by almost 50 points. They could score, of course, but they could also defend, with only Boston College having scored more than 20 points against the Huskies and only UMass being the other team to top 10 points.

So how did the Beavers chew through the Northeastern defense to score 48 points?

This is Babson's first season in D1AA and they knew they had a lot to learn about the division. They did that, and then some.

It took, said Head Coach Carrick Pell, "a lot of perseverance resilience, and finding that edge that we’ve been missing the last few weeks."

Sometimes you have to fight for it. But you also have to be tactically smart, Babson was both, at times, even if not always.

"We reduced our penalty count to a reasonable number," said Pell. "Even still, we found ways to let a very dynamic, explosive Northeastern team off the hook several times. Similarly, we were fortunate enough to take advantage of some lucky bounces throughout the match. Hats off to Northeastern, because every time we scored, they countered immediately and kept themselves out in front for the majority of the game."

But in the closing 10 minutes, Babson put it together.

"We happen to play nearly flawless rugby, combined with elapsing discipline on their behalf," said Pell. "The combination of those two things plus tremendous amount of heart and soul presented the opportunity for the final result."

Down 47-29 with those 10 minutes left, the Beavers scored three tries to pull it out 48-47.

"Without a doubt is one of the most amazing rugby matches I’ve ever been a part of or witnessed," said Pell.
"I am grateful that we came out on top and I’m confident that if we didn’t, I’d have the same feeling because that’s what the sport is about: playing it to the whistle and leaving everything out on the pitch."

The improbably win sets up a Liberty final with Boston College, who has been firing nicely despite their 27-22 loss to Northeastern a couple of weeks ago. Sean Murphy leads from the front at tighthead and is the team captain, He has been excellent in the trenches, while flyhalf Picks Lively has been strong as vice captain and playmaker. After a semester in Australia, Bobby Voth has returned to play scrumhalf and brought a little bit of extra nous to his game.

Bolstered by an excellent back row the Eagles could take this final, but as we found out, don't count Babson out. Even if there are only 10 minutes left.
