Arkansas Wins Red River 7s
Arkansas Wins Red River 7s
The University of Arkansas has won the Red River Conference 7s, defeating Texas A&M 17-12 in the final.
The Razorbacks blew through Pool C action fairly comfortably, beating both LSU and Houston handily. Oklahoma won Pool B by sweeping Texas Christian and University of Texas. It was a little tighter in Pool A, where Texas Tech, Baylor, and Texas A&M all ended up 1-1. The tiebreaker came down to points different, with A&M a +20, Baylor -1, and Texas Tech -19.
The weather was atrocious, with heavy rain and a lightning delay, as well. Players contended with some cold, wet conditions and standing water on the pitch at times.
Arkansas really had to work for it to get by LSU 15-12. Baylor continued to make it dramatic, waiting until overtime to beat Texas.
The semis had less drama as Arkansas and A&M won easily. In the final, the teams were tied 12-12 with time essentially up, when Arkansas scored to win it.
Arkansas garners an automatic spot in the USA Rugby National College 7s Championships, but they already had that thanks to a win at the Big XII. Certainly the Razorbacks have shown some tenacity and staying power, winning qualifiers two months apart. They also showed that they can finish strong at the Red River.
