The University of Arkansas did just enough to put themselves in position to win the Heart of America conference after they tied Missouri 24-24 Saturday.
Having beaten previously undefeated Kansas State, the Razorbacks really only had one obstacle in front of them, and it was Mizzou, who had lot to K-State 25-24 in the fall.
In a back-and-forth game, Missouri scored four tries and converted two, while Arkansas managed three tries. But center Rolando Bissot did his part, kicking all three conversions and adding a penalty.
“His kicking kept us in the game,” said Arkansas Head Coach Warren Fyfe.
In fact, Bissot had a chance to win the game with a penalty, but he hit the posts.
The Razorbacks got a big game from captain and prop Robert Henderson and fullback Blake Baty made some crucial tackles to prevent Missouri scores.
“This is the first time we’ve been outside on a rugby field in several weeks,” said Fyfe. “We’re been finding places to practice like parking lots. With all that we did OK, but we have a lot of work to do. We were sluggish at the start and gave up three soft tries with an interception and not catching the ball on the kickoffs.”
Arkansas has a solid bench and their subs provided a much-needed boost to help them come back.
With the tie, Arkansas is now 2-0-1 with three games left. Missouri is 2-1-1 with two games left. Even if Missouri wins their remaining games and get bonus points, and Kansas State wins their final game with a bonus point, the Razorbacks, with three bonus-point wins, will win the conference.
Arkansas has Oklahoma State, Truman State, and Iowa State, teams with a combined 1-5 record.
Missouri has Truman State and Oklahoma State remaining. Kansas State has one more game, against 1-3 Kansas.
