7s Eagles Latest - Contract Time
Eight of the 12 USA men's 7s players from the Rio Olympics have been offered new contacts for the coming season, with an additional four who were not initially on the squad for Rio also getting contracts.
The pay scale, however, is expected to be markedly reduced. USA Rugby does not yet know what kind of grant the US Olympic Committee will give the program for the upcoming season, and, in addition, had paid players a little more leading up to the Rio Olympics. So money is tight at present, and reports are that the contracts are all at base pay of about $1,700 a month - although there will remain a bonus structure. For some players, this will be a significant drop, as much as 50%, from what they were making per month in the first eight months of the year.
As a result, it's conceivable we could see some players opt not to re-sign, but it's just as likely players will opt to return to the program and perhaps augment their income in other ways.
It's not hard to guess who the eight players are who got contract offers. With Nate Ebner back with the New England Patriots, Chris Wyles now officially retired from international rugby, Thretton Palamo now under contact with Bristol, Ben Pinkelman finishing up at school, and Andrew Durutalo either back with the Sunwolves in Super Rugby or at another pro team, those four won't be on the World Series team for 2016-17. Thus Perry Baker, Danny Barrett, Garrett Bender, Madison Hughes, Folau Niua, Carlin Isles, Zack Test, and Maka Unufe would be the other eight. It's likely Martin Iosefo has an offer on the table, with three others, along with military WCAP players, also a possibility.
The USA women's team also has about a dozen players with contract offers, but the urgency is a little less for them as they don't assemble until October, whereas the Men's 7s team gets back to work in less than two weeks.
No official word on the coaches and their contract talks, but the expectation is that Mike Friday and Chris Brown (men's team), and Richie Walker (women's team) will receive extensions.
